Why is the Waikato worth exploring?
Because it packs two world-famous experiences into an easy drive from Auckland. At Hobbiton, the Shire from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films has been preserved among rolling farmland, complete with hobbit holes, the Party Tree and the Green Dragon Inn. At Waitomo, an underground world of limestone caves is lit by thousands of glowworms, creating a starry sky beneath the earth.
In between, the Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest, winds through the region, and the west coast town of Raglan offers black-sand surf beaches and a laid-back vibe.

Hamilton and Hamilton Gardens
Hamilton is New Zealand’s largest inland city, on the banks of the Waikato River. Hamilton Gardens is the highlight: a remarkable collection of themed gardens from around the world, including Chinese, Japanese, Italian Renaissance and Indian char bagh gardens.
Raglan
Around 45 km west of Hamilton, Raglan is a relaxed surf town with world-famous left-hand breaks at Manu Bay. On the way, Bridal Veil Falls drops 55 m into a forest pool, a short walk from the road.
Hobbiton Movie Set
Near Matamata, the Hobbiton Movie Set is set on a working sheep farm. Guided tours lead through the Shire’s hobbit holes and gardens to the Green Dragon Inn, where tours finish with a drink. Tours are by booking only, so plan ahead.
Waitomo
Waitomo is a small village above an extraordinary network of limestone caves. The most famous experience is a boat ride through a glowworm grotto, gliding in silence beneath thousands of tiny lights. Other caves offer walking tours among spectacular limestone formations, and adventure operators run blackwater rafting, abseiling and caving trips.
Mangapohue Natural Bridge and Marokopa Falls
West of Waitomo, the road to the coast passes the Mangapohue Natural Bridge, a giant limestone arch reached by a short walk, and Marokopa Falls, a broad, impressive waterfall in native bush.

The road to Raglan is hilly and winding, and the road west of Waitomo to Marokopa is narrow and winding through the hills.
