Why start a campervan trip in Auckland?
Because most international flights land here, and the North Island’s highlights radiate out from the city in every direction. Head north and you reach the Bay of Islands, birthplace of the nation, and the far north’s giant sand dunes and kauri forests. Head east and the Coromandel Peninsula offers some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Head south and you are into the green heart of the Waikato, Hobbiton, Waitomo and on to Rotorua and Taupō.
Auckland is also the start of the classic end-to-end trip: up the North Island, across Cook Strait and down the South Island. See our Auckland to Christchurch in 21 days and whole of New Zealand in 4 weeks itineraries.
What should you do before driving away?
- Allow time for the handover. Learn how the vehicle’s power, water, gas, toilet and heating work before you leave.
- Stock up on groceries. Auckland’s large supermarkets near the airport and in the suburbs have the best choice and prices you will find on the trip.
- Avoid peak traffic. Auckland’s motorways are busy at rush hour; a mid-morning or early-afternoon departure is far more relaxing.
- Pack and secure everything before setting off.
- Keep day one short. After a long flight, a first night within an hour of the city is ideal.
Where should you stay on your first night?
| First-night option | Distance from Auckland | Why stay |
|---|---|---|
| City holiday parks | In the city | Full facilities, close to the airport and attractions |
| Auckland regional parks | Around 40–70 km | Beachside and farm park campsites around the region |
| Muriwai | Around 45 km | Black-sand surf beach and gannet colony |
| Orewa and Waiwera | Around 40 km north | Seaside town on the road to Northland |
| Firth of Thames (Miranda) | Around 75 km south-east | Hot pools and shorebird centre on the way to the Coromandel |
| Clevedon | Around 40 km south-east | Rural village with markets and wineries |
Auckland’s regional parks have some lovely campsites by the sea and on farmland, some suitable for motorhomes; check the council’s information and book ahead where required.
What is it like driving out of Auckland in a motorhome?
Auckland is the busiest city in New Zealand, and driving here is the most demanding part of many trips. The motorway network is extensive but often congested, especially at peak times and around the Harbour Bridge and Southern Motorway. Plan your route before you set off, have a passenger navigate, and avoid rush hour.
Heading north, State Highway 1 crosses the Harbour Bridge and continues past Orewa towards Warkworth. Heading south, the Southern Motorway leads towards Hamilton and the turn-off for the Coromandel via State Highway 2. Inner-city streets are narrow and parking for large vehicles is very limited, so explore the centre by public transport, ferry or taxi.
The roads to the west coast beaches, such as Piha and Karekare, are steep and winding; they are spectacular, but take them slowly or join a tour.
What are the best tours and experiences from Auckland?
Waiheke Island
A short ferry ride across the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island is famous for its vineyards, olive groves, beaches and art galleries. Wine tours and hop-on hop-off buses make it easy to explore. Leave the motorhome on the mainland and go as a foot passenger.
Rangitoto Island and the Hauraki Gulf
Rangitoto, Auckland’s youngest volcano, is a short ferry ride from the city, with a walk to the summit crater through lava fields and pōhutukawa forest. Whale and dolphin safaris in the Hauraki Gulf often encounter Bryde’s whales and common dolphins, and Tiritiri Matangi is an open sanctuary for rare native birds.
Sky Tower and the harbour
The Sky Tower gives the best view over the city’s harbours and volcanic cones. Sailing trips on the Waitematā Harbour, the Harbour Bridge climb and bungy, and the ferry to Devonport are other classic city experiences.
West coast beaches
Wild black-sand beaches such as Piha, Karekare and Muriwai lie less than an hour west. Guided tours combine the beaches with the rainforest of the Waitākere Ranges, and Muriwai’s gannet colony is a highlight.
Hobbiton and Waitomo day trips
Day tours from Auckland visit the Hobbiton Movie Set and the Waitomo glowworm caves. With a motorhome, you can visit both on the Waikato and Waitomo route instead.
Museums and culture
Auckland War Memorial Museum, on the edge of the Domain, has outstanding collections of Māori and Pacific treasures, and cultural performances. The city’s markets, food scene and waterfront are well worth a day.
Which routes leave from Auckland?
- Northland: north to the Bay of Islands, around 230 km, and Cape Reinga.
- Coromandel: east around the Coromandel Peninsula to Tauranga, around 380 km.
- Waikato and Waitomo: south to Hamilton, Hobbiton and Waitomo, around 200 km.
Which trips work best from Auckland?

Where do international visitors usually pick up an RV in Auckland?
Most campervan and motorhome depots are clustered around Auckland Airport in the southern suburbs, rather than in the city centre. That makes it easy to collect your vehicle after landing and head south or east without driving through the central city.
