Twin Glaciers in the Rainforest

Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are twin glaciers on the West Coast that descend from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. Heli-hike tours fly you onto the glacier for guided ice walks through blue-ice caves and crevasses. Scenic helicopter flights overfly both glaciers with optional snow landings. Valley walks provide free, ground-level glacier viewpoints through the rainforest.

The weather is the critical variable — the West Coast receives approximately 5,000 mm of rainfall annually. Allow at least two days to accommodate weather cancellations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — via heli-hike (helicopter to the upper glacier, then guided ice walk with crampons). The terminal faces are not accessible on foot.
